Aliases are a built-in function in Microsoft Windows, and allows applications to define an easy-to-remember name for the application. This, in turn, allows the user to start the application by typing it's corresponding short name. WinMapper now allows the user to add, edit, or remove these aliases. Please take good care when modifying aliases, as some applications may not be able to run if you remove essential names. However, if you feel sure, this is an excellent alternative to using shortcuts, as you can launch the application simply by starting a Run window (WIN+R if enabled, or an alias running the function GotoFolder) and typing in the short name. Aliases where the file they are referring to could not be found are marked in red. Please excercise caution before removing aliases, and note that some aliases may not require an actual filename as the setting. Screenshots - Edit alias The Alias window enables you to create or modify an Alias:
The Alias field is the alias, or nickname, for the application or document. This should be a single, easy-to-remember, word. Once the Alias is succesfully registered, you can open the application or document by running the Alias. The Application field is the fully qualified path to the application or document you wish to create an Alias (nickname) for. This is the file that will be opened when you run the Alias from the command line, Run menu, etc. Click on the [Browse] button to search for the application or document. This brings up the WinMapper Select window, allowing for easy selection of known files. Click on [OK] to update or create the alias, or click on [Cancel] to discard your changes. |
